GRE percentiles, every score

A 165 in Verbal beats ~96% of test takers, while a 165 in Quant beats ~79% — Quant scores cluster higher, so program cutoffs read differently per section.

What score do you actually need?

330+

Elite. Top-5 programs in competitive fields (CS, economics, top MBA-adjacent). Roughly the top 2% of all test takers.

320–329

Highly competitive. Comfortable for most top-20 programs; strong engineering programs typically want the Quant side at 165+.

310–319

Strong. Above average and safe for the majority of master's and PhD programs in most fields.

300–309

Workable. Meets stated minimums at many programs — pair it with a strong GPA, research, or portfolio.

<300

Below average for selective admissions. The good news: score gains of 5–10 points in 4–8 weeks of targeted practice are common.

Common questions

How is the GRE scored?
Quant and Verbal are each scored 130–170 in 1-point steps. The shorter GRE has 27 scored questions per measure across two sections, and the second section's difficulty adapts to your first-section performance — doing well early unlocks the harder second section, which is required for top scores. Writing is scored 0–6. No penalty for wrong answers, so never leave blanks.
How accurate is this calculator?
It reflects the typical raw→scaled relationship, but because the GRE is section-adaptive, two people with the same raw count can differ by a couple of scaled points. Treat it as a solid estimate; for a real prediction, take a full diagnostic.
Do old GRE scores (200–800) convert to the new scale?
Roughly: old 800 Quant ≈ 166, old 700 ≈ 155, old 600 ≈ 148 (Verbal converts higher: old 700 Verbal ≈ 165, old 600 ≈ 160). ETS publishes official concordance tables; scores over 5 years old have expired for reporting anyway.
What's the average GRE score?
Roughly 151 Verbal and 157 Quant among all test takers — about 302–308 combined depending on cohort. Averages among admitted students at selective programs run notably higher.
